Attic Entertainment did a splendid job transferring the game system from its p&p origins to the computer. That however means that the Northland trilogy features several game mechanics that are rather unique and obscure to "normal" players. The developers often stated that these games were made by fans for fans. Being familiar with the p&p ruleset helps tremendously but is by no means required to enjoy the games.

Unfortunately, Sir-Tech did a lackluster job with the English localisation and introduced many bugs that did not exist in the German original. If possible you should choose the German CD-ROM relase over the English one.

Classic example of a failed conversion from a pen and paper system to a computer game. Realms of Arkania is pretty and it presents well, but it's full of mechanics that should never have been put in a computer game. It has some great concepts, it looks great, making chracters is fun...but the final delivery is poor and the game part of the game kind of fails.
